Core Web Vitals are metrics determined by Google to evaluate and test user experience, which is one of the most important criteria for SEO. Google tests the suitability of websites for user experience through Google core web vitals metrics. User experience is among the most important SEO ranking criteria for Google. For this reason, we can say that core web vitals score directly affects search engine rankings.

In this content you can find all the information on the subject such as what is core web vitals and how to test and optimize it. I have prepared this content based on my experience. I successfully pass core web vitals metrics on all my websites. I hope it will be useful to you too.

What are core web vitals?

Core web vitals SEO” are metrics developed by Google to test the user experience. Many factors such as page opening speed, scrolling rate, loading time of content, first loaded content are tested through these metrics. In a sub-title, I gave information about core web vitals metrics and what they are testing.

Core web vitals metrics

Core web vitals consists of various metrics, and each metric tests different criteria. Here are those metrics and their descriptions.

1.CLS core web vitals

It is the abbreviation of Cumulative Layout Shift. CLS is the metric that tests the layout shift within a certain time after the user visits the page. When the user visits a page, it is recommended not to have large layout shifts due to images or advertisements on the page. This negatively affects the user experience and directly affects the search engine ranking of the website. The CLS value recommended by Google is below 0.1 points.

2.LCP core web vitals

LCP with its longer name Largest Contentful Paint is a metric used to measure the loading speed of a website. LCP is used to determine how long it takes for the main content of the website to be loaded and displayed to the user. It is an important metric for user experience. The speed of the website has an important element among the SEO ranking criteria. The accepted value for LCP is under 2.5 seconds. In other words, it is considered a good value for LCP to load content such as video, image, text in 2.5 seconds at the latest and display the main content to the visitor when entering the website.

3.Fid core web vitals

FID is a metric used to measure the time elapsed between the time the user visits the web page and the first click. In fact, this metric is also used to measure the opening speed of the web page. It is a recommended value for this metric that the user clicks within 100 milliseconds at the latest after visiting the website. It is recommended that the FID value be below 100 milliseconds.

4. inp core web vitals ( Core web vitals inp issue detected on your website )

INP with its longer name Interaction to Next Paint will be among the core web vitals metrics as of March 2024. You can get information about the current inp values of your website in the Google Search Console Core Web Vitals section. However, according to the official statement made by Google, INP will officially be a ranking criterion from March 2024. You can access the official statement made by Google here: INP

The INP, which will replace the FID metric, will be used to measure the loading speed of a page. When the website visitor logs into the page, how long the page reacts will be a metric that will be used for the loading time of the content and the time to reach the main content. The recommended value for INP is under 200 milliseconds.

Core web vitals ranking factor

Core web vitals is a ranking factor for google. Most SEO experts agree that this is not a ranking criterion. However, I don’t think so. After the optimization we made on my customers’ sites, we saw great increases in their organic traffic and rankings. Google doesn’t add any metrics to Search Console that it won’t count as ranking criteria. So take these metrics seriously and optimize if the values are bad. You will see the increase in rankings in the short or medium term.

Core web vitals test

The main sites where you can perform “Core web vitals check” are;

  • Google PageSpeed Insights: It is a website supported by Google. Simply visit the page and submit the URL you want to test. It doesn’t give the best results in my opinion. I can get better results with Ligthhouse and it’s more realistic.
  • Lighthouse core web vitals: Lighthouse is one of the best extensions developed by Google that you can use via Google Chrome. After completing the extension installation, tap the Ligthhouse icon in the extensions section on the website and click the “Generate Report” button. The extension will start measuring Core Web Vitals values for you on a different page. For realistic testing, I recommend using this extension.
  • GTmetrix: Gtmetrix is among the best websites you can use to measure website speed and performance. I think it is the best core web vitals checker. You can test the performance of your website by choosing from different locations. As a result of your test, Gtmetrix reports to you the negativities that affect the performance of your site. By correcting these, you can optimize your site according to this report.
  • Pingdom: My last website recommendation for the “Google core web vitals test” process will be Pingdom. You can send your site url by visiting the website and test it on this site.

CLS Checker

As I explained above, CLS are major layout shifts on the website. A major layout shift that may occur in the site in the first seconds after the user visits the site causes a CLS issue. CLS problem is usually caused by images, videos and ads like Google Adsense. You can test CLS with Gtmetrix, Ligthhouse or Google Page Speed Insights.

How to improve core web vitals?

After testing through test sites, you can correct the deficiencies and optimize your website by getting the core web vitals report. If you do not have technical knowledge, you can send the report you received to your software developer and ask them to correct the identified deficiencies. In general, what you should do is:

  • Optimize images and videos: Optimize images and videos on your website. Use the webp format recommended by Google for images. Use the appropriate plugins for fast loading of videos.
  • Optimize JavaScript and CSS: Remove unnecessary CSS and Javascript codes that are not used on your website. Defer JS codes especially for INP value. You can use “async” or “defer” for this. Cache plugins such as Wprocket will help you for this. WP rocket also ensures that unused CSS is removed and your site is optimized for it.
  • Use caching: Cache plugins ensure that all content on the website, such as content, images, codes, is cached and loaded faster. For this reason, I definitely recommend you to use cache plugins on your website. The best ones are Wp rocket, Lite Speed House and Wp Fastest Cache.
  • You can use CDN: If you have a website that serves globally, not regionally, I recommend using a CDN. CDNs direct your website visitor to the geographically closest server, allowing them to enter your website faster. Cloud Flare is one of the best CDNs you can use for free.
  • Use fast servers: Server and hosting is one of the most important factors for the speed of the website. Shared hosting causes your website to load slower. Therefore, using dedicated servers such as VDS is an important criterion to reduce server response time and increase website speed.

Core web vitals assessment: failed

The data you submit for verification in Google Search Console results in an average of 7-10 days. If you continue to receive the “Core web vitals assessment failed” error after verification, it means that the errors in the relevant metrics continue on your website. Google Pagespeed İnsigts can’t sometimes give real results. I recommend that you test your site with the eyes of a real visitor and use tools such as Ligthhouse and Gtmetrix in testing. You can start the verification again by removing the errors you have detected.

Which are currently the most important core web vitals metrics?

I think all metrics are important. Getting a result above the recommended value in any metric causes the core web vitals assessment to fail and your site to lose ranking. So keep optimizing until all your metrics are green.

Core web vitals chrome extension

As I explained in detail under the how to check core web vitals heading, I think Lighthouse is among the best tools for testing. Therefore, you can easily test your pages by downloading the Lighthouse extension to your Google Chrome browser. You can download and easily install the Web vitals extension for Google Chrome from here: Download Google Chrome Lighthouse extension.

What are the 3 pillars of Core Web Vitals?

The three most important key metrics for core web vitals are: CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift), FID, and LCP. The FID metric will be replaced by INP from 2024/March.

What is a good LCP?

The recommended value in the LCP metric for the website is under 2.5 seconds.
