Backlink Audit Guide: For SEO, Using Google Disavow Tool

Backlink Audit is one of the most important parts of the SEO process. Checking your Backlink profile regularly is one of the things you need to do for your website. Toxic links sent to your site can cause ranking loss. For this reason, you need to do the SEO backlink audit process regularly. In this content, you can find all the information about what is backlink audit and how to do backlink audit.

What is a backlink audit?

Comprehensive backlink audit can be defined as the process of checking all backlinks given to your website from other sites and disavowing harmful ones.

Why do a backlink audit?

Website backlink audit is a process that should be done regularly in terms of SEO. A possible spam backlink or hacklink attack on your website may cause your site to drop in rankings or to disappear completely. The off page part of your website, namely the backlink profile, is at least as important as the on page. I use backlink audit services to audit my site every 15 days and exclude harmful backlinkers with the disavow tool.

Should I do a backlink audit?

Google has given detailed information about when you should use the Disavow tool for backlinks in its detailed explanation regarding the Backlink Disavow process. You can visit “Disavow links to your site” for a detailed guide on the Disavow tool by Google.

In its statement on the subject, Google says the following in summary;

  • Google, the control of which backlinks will be harmful and which will be useful is done by the algorithm,
  • It says that the Disavow tool should not be used unless there is a spam backlink or hacklink attack on your site.
  • If the backlinks sent to your site have caused or are likely to cause manual action on your site, or if your site has entered the sandbox, it recommends using this tool.

How to do a backlink audit?

In the backlink audit process, I also act according to these statements made by Google on all my sites. I don’t do any seo backlink auditing from SEO tools like Semrush, Ahrefs. The only tool I use for this process is the Google Search Console tool. This is a free tool already offered by Google. I recommend you to use only this tool in backlink audit process and not to use tools such as Ahrefs, Semrush and Moz.

To perform a backlink audit via Google Search Console, follow the steps below;

  • First, visit the Google Search Console page and log in with the account that your site is attached to.
  • Then, in the upper section, select the site you want to perform Backlink audit.
  • Enter the “Links” section in the main menu.
  • Then click on “Top linking sites” and “More”.
  • Examine the links here, domains and URLs one by one.
  • Upload harmful backlinks that you think will not be useful to your site in the Disavow file example below.
  • Then login to the Google Disavow page here: Google Disavow Tool Login.
  • Select a property selection from the “Select Property” section.
  • If you are doing this for the first time, upload the file you created from the “Upload disavow list” section.
  • If you have uploaded before, you can upload your new file from the “Replace” section.

Example Disavow file

For the file you will upload to the Google Disavow tool, use the domain and URL as in the examples below.

  • If you want to deny an entire domain, add it to the file like this: “domain:”
  • If you’re only going to reject one page in a domain, use the entire url without adding anything at the beginning or the end. Example:”
  • The file you will upload should be a simple file encoded with 7-bit ASCII or UTF-8 and should have a .txt extension. I leave the sample upload file below. You can edit and use this file by downloading it.

Best backlink audit tools

I presented the seo backlinks audit guide to you above. In this context, in my opinion, it is sufficient to only audit from Google Search Console. However, if there is a spam or hacklink attack on your site, you can use other SEO tools for a more detailed analysis. The two best SEO tools you can use for this process are Semrush and Ahrefs. However, these tools are paid. I would like to remind this.

Why should i connect google analytics to backlink audit?

While performing “backlink audit seo” from SEO tools such as Semrush, Ahrefs, these tools also ask you to connect your Google Analytics account. The reason is to use the Google database to detect the backlinks sent to your site. By connecting to the Google analytics account, they include the backlinks detected by Google in the backlink profile audit process.

Semrush website audit

Semrush is one of the most used tools by SEO experts. You can perform a site audit as well as use Semrush as an auxiliary tool to disavow backlinks. You can test your website and access all data about your website with the Semrush site audit tool.

Backlink Audit free

The tools you can perform backlink audit for free are as follows:

  • Ahrefs backlink checker, ( Log in to Ahrefs with your email Which you use on Google Search Console. Add your site to Ahrefs. After site verification, you can detect toxic backlinks by using Ahrefs’ backlink spam checker feature.)
  • Google Search Console.

Backlink Toxicity Score

SEO tools, especially Semrush, show your site’s Toxicity score. I do not take this data into account. I only use Google Search Console in the disavow process.

How do you vet and audit backlinks?

You can detect toxic backlinks through seo tools such as Google Search Console, Semrush, Ahrefs and block them via Google Disavow.
